Atlantico Business Development, the maritime business developer and independent port promoter in the Benelux, is proud to announce its fifth Iberian ports seminar: Ship2iberia 2020. The upcoming edition of this annual event will take place at the Mercure Antwerp City South hotel on January 30th, 2020. From now on Ship2iberia will alternate its location each year between Rotterdam and Antwerp.
The Iberian port system in 2018 moved a combined total of 656 million tons of cargo, a new record. Spanish ports accounted for the majority of this throughput, with a total of 563,4 million tons of cargo in 2018: 18,2 million tons or 3,35% more than in 2017. As far as containers are concerned, Iberian ports in 2018 for the first time in history handled more than 20 million TEUs together. The ro-ro sector did well in Iberian ports. In Spain, ro-ro shipping grew towards 61,94 million tons handled last year, a plus of 6,67%. In Portugal ro-ro cargo grew by 11,1%, reaching 1,6 million tons. Figures for the first nine months of 2019 suggest a continuation of this upward trend.
Algeciras is still firmly the leader of the Iberian port pack and continues to grow. The port last years handled more than 107 million tons, which means Algeciras is Europe’s fourth port in cargo throughput. You can find the full 2018 analysis and port ranking in our Iberian Ports Brief.
